Let me tell you something about me that might surprise you.

I am stronger and fitter right now, in my 40s, in the thick of perimenopause,  than I have been since my 20s.

My mind is sharp. My energy is real. I bounce up hills. I sing in the car. I wake up genuinely excited about the day ahead,  and even more excited about the 80-year-old I'm becoming.

But it wasn't always this way.

A few years ago perimenopause arrived  and it hit me hard.

Not just physically. Mostly mentally and emotionally. I was getting out of bed to tend to my kids but I was barely holding myself together. My energy had completely tanked. My nervous system felt permanently switched on,  like a car alarm that wouldn't stop.

And then came the day I knew something had to change.

I couldn't get through a day without crying. And I'm not a crier.

That was my moment.

Here's what makes my story a little different.

I came to this work young,  at 20 years old I was diagnosed with cancer. I went through chemotherapy and radiation. And somewhere in the middle of all of that I made a decision that has shaped every single thing I've done since.

I decided that I would do everything within my power to nourish this body. Not out of fear. Out of deep, genuine respect for what it was capable of.

Food. Movement. Sleep. Emotional resilience.

 

Not for how I looked.

Not for a number on a scale. But for my 80-year-old self,  the woman I fully intend to be, still travelling, still strong, still taking absolutely no nonsense from anyone.

My treatment also left me with an increased risk of osteoporosis. So I don't just teach bone health,  I live it. Every single day. Because I have to.

So when perimenopause brought me to my knees, despite everything I knew, despite all my training and qualifications and years of experience, I understood something profound.

 

Knowing and doing are two very different things.

 

And even the woman who knows exactly what her body needs sometimes has to stop, recommit to herself, and start again.

That recommitment — that decision to show up for myself — was the turning point. Not a new program. Not a new diet. A decision.
