Hi, I’m Wal Herring, a Nutritionist and Women’s Lifestyle Health Specialist.
I help women 40 plus who feel off in their own bodies and want a clear, simple way forward. My approach is practical and science backed: eat for your changing physiology, move with purpose, protect sleep, and build a stress tool kit. No perfection. Just the fundamentals done consistently.
If you are here, you are likely deciding whether my advice will work for you. The honest answer is I do not know. I am good at breaking down the actions. Only you can take them. To know me is to know why I care. Here are ten life experiences that shape how I coach.
-
I grew up on a farm
Life is practical, not theoretical. If I cannot put something into practice, I will not ask you to. My goal is to help you build simple systems you just do, so healthy living becomes second nature. -
I was sport mad as a kid
I ran half marathons at fourteen for fun. I have always been intrigued by the body and resilience. Today that means small daily actions that make the biggest difference. -
I represented New Zealand age group basketball
I still play socially. We may slow as we age, but we can play smarter. The same goes for food and training in midlife. -
I have moved ... a lot
I lived in more than thirty homes across five countries in my adult life. Sometimes life asks us to keep moving. The grass is not greener, just a different shade. Wherever you are in your health, own it and find the good. -
Stoicism helped in tough seasons
You cannot control everything. Know what you can control and what you cannot. You may not control symptoms today, but you can control how you eat and how you move. -
I had cancer in my early twenties
Treatment means I am more susceptible to future cancer. A healthy lifestyle is non negotiable. Roughly twenty percent of disease is genetics and the rest is lifestyle. I cannot choose my genes, but I can choose my habits. Do not wait for a diagnosis. Lifestyle is your best insurance policy. -
I have four kids
I aim to raise individuals. Parenting showed me my own stories about food and body. Kids hold up a clear mirror. -
I was the kid who loved school
I still love learning. Research articles, books, podcasts. My favourite topics are health, nutrition, exercise, and resilience. New perspectives keep me curious and useful. -
I completed a Masters in Nutrition on energy intake and expenditure
I went deep on the science and have never counted calories. Being food aware matters. Filling your head with constant sums does not. Health is not a spreadsheet. -
You should be your own business card
There is theory, there is experience, and there is the wisdom that comes from reflection. I value all three. Nutrition only works when it is applied and reviewed in your real life. That is how you discover what truly works for you.
